Stelle
Members’ Committee For Truth Dallas, TX December 16, 1986 Dear Supporter of The
Stelle Group: Recently we sent you a letter
sharing our concern about the information the Stelle Trustees were
withholding from you. We felt it was our right and our responsibility to let
you know there are differing views. For doing this, the penalties,
apparently, are going to be severe. First, Stelle Trustees’ asked that we
meet with our respective lawyers. Then they asked that we meet with their
lawyer. One member of our committee was fired from her
contractual staff position as a Language Arts and Math teacher at the Stelle
School without notice or severance pay and asked to remove all her
property from the premises. As of this writing, we are still Stelle Group
members, but it appears likely that all the committee members may be expelled from the group and barred from the premises.
As non-members we would not thereafter be able to
contact you; and since the Trustees have full use of the group’s assets to
take legal action against us, it is unlikely that we’ll be able to risk
contacting you again. While the committee has had
a number of inquiries from people wanting to join the committee or give us
financial and moral support, we have, because of the potential for litigation
raised by Trustees’ statements, kept the actual membership of the committee
limited to its founding members, Karen Robertson, Marge Haines, and Betty Van
Dyck. We are, respectively, a now-ex-Stelle School teacher, a professional in child care, and a
bookkeeper (formerly for The Stelle Group), all involved with and committed
to Stelle Group programs for a number of years. We have risked everything to
get “our truth” to you and don’t for a minute regret
our choice, whatever the consequences. What we do regret is the
clear and powerful statement made by the actions of the Trustees against us
as a response to our attempt to fulfill our moral responsibility to you. This is the way they dealt with Richard despite the pleas of a
number of us for a creative, integrative, balanced, win/win solution for all
concerned. It is a sad commentary that Trustees’ response to date has
focused on our actions rather than on their taking morally responsible action
in regard to you, the outside supporters of the
group. There is one straightforward solution which has been available and
continues to be available to the Stelle Trustees — just tell you the
truth—their truth—and let you know there are differing opinions, tell you
where these are available, and let you make your own choices based upon full
disclosure of everyone’s truth. We did not sign our initial
letter or identify ourselves individually to you at that time because our
main concern was not putting forth our individual opinions but rather letting
you know that as a group, some Stelle Group members dissented strongly from
the official group stance put forth in “A New Chapter” in the Stelle Letter.
We are now hereby dissolving the committee and speak to you henceforth as
individuals, as expressed in the enclosed personal statements. Best wishes, Karen Robertson Betty Van Dyck Marjorie Haines |
