Christ’s Last Words
There
was a question concerning the interpretation of some of the last words of
Christ. In regard to His asking, “let this cup pass from me” while in the Garden of Gethsemane and His words, “... why
hast thou forsaken me,” while on the Cross, Richard said that although Christ
was known as a man of sorrows, this did not refer to personal sorrow. Rather,
His sorrow was compassion for the suffering of people due to their continual
institution of vicious cycles of cause and effect from which they could not
escape karmically. Richard thought that the intent of these last phrases
might more nearly express frustration at His not being able to do more for
mankind. (09-1968)
