Is Abortion Considered Murder? Question: Is there an Ego assigned to every fetus, and would abortion therefore constitute murder in a sense? Answer: A certain percentage of all pregnancies abort naturally within the first few weeks after conception. Usually this is because no Ego has planned to incarnate to that particular set of parents at that given time. If an Ego has planned to incarnate to parents who later decide they do not wish to have a child and terminate the pregnancy by medical abortion, then the Ego may be temporarily disappointed and be forced to wait a year or two for another opportunity to incarnate. No murder is involved, however, and no negative karma is incurred. No one is compelled to have a baby. (02-1972) Is Abortion Bad? Question: How does that relate to abortion? Answer: Since the Ego which intends to incarnate is still on the Astral Plane and has not entered the fetus during the nine months of gestation, an abortion does not take a life. The fetus has about the same status as an unborn calf or unborn kitten. The fetus is animated with animal essence, but there is no human life essence associated with it until after birth. The incarnating Ego does not have the right to interfere with the desires of the parents. If they decide that they are not ready to be parents emotionally or financially, then the worst thing they can do is become parents. The incarnating Ego can wait a couple of years or so until they are ready. (12-1974)
