Nonresident Associate (NRA) Weekend Report

by Nonresident Associate Michael Beck

It was only about a week before the NRA Weekend began that I finally decided to go. I had long hoped to attend, but I was deeply involved in writing the first draft of my dissertation proposal. How could I justify spending the money and the time? It wasn’t like I had never been to Stelle. In the summer of 1982 I attended the NRA Weekend, and, in the following month, my wife Barbara and I drove to Stelle for the Guest Week. At that time, Barbara was 6 months pregnant with our first child, Sharon Ruth. The Guest Week had made such an impression on both of us that I sought any excuse to go back. Since my last visit to Stelle, I became friends with Jesse, an inventor. He had two discoveries that I looked forward to sharing with The Stelle Group, and that justified my attending NRA Weekend.

On the morning of July 2nd I ran down the aisle of 26 concourses in the Denver airport (with suitcase and clothes bag) to catch my plane. By the time I got to my seat, the pilot informed us that a rainstorm in Chicago would delay our takeoff. We finally took off at the time I was supposed to arrive in Chicago.

During the wait I watched people struggle with interrupted plans. I thought to myself, “This is no time to get uptight.” So, I began listening to a new tape series I had recently received — In Pursuit of the Ultimate Frontier. Even though I have the On Becoming an Initiate tapes, I felt that this new and interesting presentation was something that I not only enjoyed but could also share with my friends.

It was a relief to arrive in Chicago. Patiently waiting were Nonresident Associate, Carole Gerardo (whom I’d met at last year’s NRA Weekend) and Argena Marie, a new Resident Associate of The Stelle Group. Both Carole and I asked about changes in Stelle since last year. It was refreshing to hear about improvements and growth.

When we arrived in Stelle, I made my way to my accommodation at Dorothy Finkenbiner’s home. Changing quickly, I headed for the new Reception Center, Stelle House, for the “Welcomes and Introductions.” Believe it or not, I was greeted by the familiar faces of several other NRA’s with whom I had shared last year’s NRA Weekend and Guest Week. There must be some reason why people are returning to Stelle.

One of the reasons why I returned was the FOOD —let me tell you, the cuisine is excellent. At times I wonder if I visit to eat at Stelle? I was looking forward to Richard’s Open House which is attended by the participants of The Stelle Group. This meeting is usually better than the monthly Public Meetings because of the kinds of questions asked. We were even given financial statements of The Stelle Group. It was a disappointment to see that the Philadelphia Fund wasn’t bigger than it is.

After the Open House there were refreshments at Stelle House. Everyone was glad to see friends and visitors, some from The Adelphi Organization in Texas. I crashed at midnight, but didn’t sleep for another hour. Once again I was in Stelle — another world. I was excited to be there.

Sunday morning we Nonresident Associates sat in on the Lemurian Philosophy Seminar. The topic was The Brotherhoods. President Malcolm Carnahan’s lecture on video tape surprised a number of people (including Richard) with some rather private, priviledged information. Richard instructed the class on a practical technique for assisting in the development of mystic awareness. Regular participants gave reports of their pre—class work on Members of the Brotherhoods. They discussed Brotherly qualities in Emerson, Jesus, Jean d’Arc, Elijah, Lincoln and King David. I kept thinking to myself how I would like to be there to experience all of the seminars.

Next... you guessed it, brunch at Stelle House. I found my self-control disappearing. I had two desserts! After lunch, a tour of the Stelle facilities was offered; but I’d been on the tour before, so I waited to attend the Public Meeting (during the time away from Stelle, the Stelle Forum tape series is my way of keeping in touch). Richard is patient to answer everyone’s questions, even the ones which have been asked many times before. At the Reception after the Public Meeting there were again goodies to munch on! I talked with Members of The Stelle Group about the article on Subliminal Conversion Tactics and the trip to Egypt in October that were in the last editions of “The Stelle Group Letter.”

Sunday evening the conversation at a Dinner Party for the NRA Weekend guests proved to be enlightening. I asked Laurel Krupke (formerly of Fort Collins, Ca) about her first six months at Stelle. Was it like everyone had said — a big test comes into your personal life? She answered in the affirmative. I remembered that last Summer, when Barbara and I had stayed a few extra days- after Guest Week, I sensed a great pressure about me. Was it from the intensity of the activities of the week or from an awareness of my own character? Anyway, the pressure seemed relieved by going home, but then, I longed to come back to live in Stelle.

In fact, the August Guest Week of 1982 was one of the most important times in my entire life. From the Stelle Group, Barbara and I learned about the Better Baby Institute. The full significance of this program did not register until April 1983 when both of us attended the Better Baby Course, “How to Multiply Your Baby’s Intelligence,” in Denver. What an impact! What a blow to all the old paradigms I had followed! What excitement in learning about Glenn Doman’s wonderful work in brain development and early learning at the Better Baby Institute! As a university professor beginning my 14th year of teaching, I thought of the many concepts and teachings that I would drop and replace with my new insights. But, as often is the case with people who read The Ultimate Frontier, not everyone wants to hear about the Better Baby. Ignorance and its resultant fear abound.

“Breakfast with Richard Kieninger” at the Annual Nonresident Associate Weekend.

I left the Dinner Party and popped in on a Pizza Party at Dave Childress’ house. I got into some talk on skiing and the new physics, among many other topics. I noticed that many of the people from last year’s NRA Weekend and/or Guest Week had become residents of Stelle. Was I going to have the same experience? Many of the new people in Stelle seem young; interestingly, all of the people in Stelle usually end up young, no matter what their ages are. That night I thought to myself, “I’m just getting used to this place again and will have to leave the day after tomorrow.”

Following the Festival of Joy Parade, July 4, 1983, beside the hayride wagon.

Then came the Fourth of July! We had ‘Breakfast with Richard’ at Stelle House. This is when NRA’s can ask any questions we want to. I surged ahead with scientific questions on energy, psychotronic weapons, Tesla, Bearden, etc. Let’s face it — there are a lot of things that I would like to know. Three of the Guests had to leave early, they said they were very impressed with the overall quality of the weekend. I thought to myself, “Until you come here to a Guest Week, you hardly get to know Stelle.” My fellow Nonresident Associate, Randy Cook, shared some insights into his reading of Wilhelm Reich’s The Function of the Orgasm. Others asked their own kind of questions. I felt like sometimes we were just visiting and having a nice chat, and I wanted to probe more into the questions of the Universe, science, etc. But Richard met each individual on the subject of their choice. I was learning a good lesson in patience because of the many questions I didn’t get to ask. (Big excuse, I can always write to Richard — right?) I ended up sitting next to Jeffrey Bassett, a Member of The Adelphi Organization who brought the fireworks. Little did I realize then that this man is on several of the tapes of the In Pursuit of the Ultimate Frontier radio program series. Oh well, maybe one day I’ll have an opportunity to tell him personally how well the tapes were done! Richard politely excused himself to make ready for the Parade. A special dedication of this year’s parade was made by Paul Barker in memory of Buckminster Fuller who had just died on July 2nd. The Festival of Joy Parade was just sensational (as you can tell from the photographs) After the parade there were games galore, they need about three volleyball courts at Stelle instead of one! The children’s toy — rocket altitude contest was supervised by Chuck Roehm. I helped retrieve some of the rockets which landed more than a mile away.

One of the most beautiful moments of the weekend occurred when we all joined in several circles within circles and sang “America the Beautiful.” We were provided with a sensitive rendition by Stelle’s accomplished pianist, Spencer Keyes. The power, warmth and unity of that moment is still vivid in my mind. (In fact, I tried to recreate that special moment last Sunday at Barbara’s church where I provided the special music — you guessed it — “America the Beautiful” as I remembered it from Stelle.)

A portion of three concentric circles formed to share singing “America the Beautiful.”

After dark, a campfire with singing and some ‘mean’ guitar pickin’ entertained the gathering. And, of course, I must tell about the spectacular fireworks. Jeff Bassett brought a superb assortment of firecrackers, fountains, aerial bombs, rockets, etc. A number of people from the community, including Richard, took delight in. setting off this beautiful display. I lit a few myself!

As the evening came to a close, I felt sad and tired. I had packed a lot of events into three days, and now it was all over. Please, don’t misunderstand me, I experienced love, joy, excitement, and learning. Stelle has become more than just a place in Illinois. As the events of each day unfold, the information presented in The Ultimate Frontier, the On Becoming an Initiate tapes, and In Pursuit of the Ultimate Frontier radio programs, becomes more of a reality.

The importance of my job at the university, my doctorate, etc. seem secondary in my life. I cannot ignore my inner quest to respond to the challenges facing mankind today. As I told Barbara recently, “Can you imagine what our lives would be like if we hadn’t heard about The Ultimate Frontier? Just think of how empty and incomplete our lives would be.” I sincerely mean that. I am thankful for the many books and tapes available through The Stelle Group and The Adelphi Organization. They are at least some tie between the life that we have in Colorado and the one that we experience in Stelle. ∆
