Last November, the directors of the Stelle Community Association sponsored a meeting of people interested in helping new residents become acclimated to Stelle living. Many of the people attending this meeting were new residents of Stelle and brought lots of ideas of how we could help facilitate new residents. Out of this meeting, the Friendly Neighbors Association was born.

The purpose of the Friendly Neighbors Association is to introduce Stelle living to newcomers moving into the community. Most residents of Stelle enjoy helping new folks get settled, answering their many questions, and just being a “Friendly Neighbor.”

We have been holding informal gatherings with new folks a couple weeks after their arrival to verbally go over all the data we have collected as well as answer any other questions they may have. The majority of our Friendly Neighbor Packet is stored on computer discs. This facilitates regular up-dating to make sure the information is current for each new arrival. At the rate our community is growing this is a must!

When someone moves into Stelle, the Friendly Neighbors are notified. We try to stop in to see new people within a few hours of their arrival to personally welcome them to Stelle and offer them any assistance. We check with them about their plans for dinner that evening. Some welcome an invitation to another’s home for dinner and a chance to relax, others prefer to keep unpacking and would like dinner delivered to their door. We do our best to accommodate the new person’s/family’s wishes. We also try to answer any immediate questions and encourage the new resident to phone should they need any assistance or have a question. As you can see, the goals of the Friendly Neighbors are extensive.

The Friendly Neighbors Association is developing an information package that is given to newcomers soon after their arrival. Our hope is that this package will answer most questions a new resident of Stelle might have as well as offer information about life in Stelle and the surrounding areas. (A similar welcoming service has been offered to newcomers to The Adelphi Organization for the past few years.)

As a separate booklet we are also planning to publish a Stelle Yellow Pages/Resource Book. This book will include a short profile of everyone at Stelle listing their areas of interest and hobbies. Our hope is that this Resource Book will help new residents as well as old “connect” with people having similar interests and thereby help develop our Stelle extended family.

We feel there is a great need for this service in Stelle and look forward to each new person’s arrival. It is always exciting to see a moving van in Stelle, and it seems to bring out people with offers of help. A newcomer doesn’t feel alone here for long!
