Is Self-Denial Necessary in Practicing the Virtues?

Question:   Practicing the Twelve Virtues seems to require rigid discipline. What if an individual does not have the strength for self-denial?

Answer:     Use of the Great Virtues brings such rich rewards into a person’s life that it is difficult to imagine one having to deny himself anything in order to practice them, Of course, just knowing the names of the Great Virtues and saying you are going to follow them does not instantly change your behavior patterns into accordance with them. It takes time to replace a bad habit with a better way of behaving, and we must be tolerant of ourselves as we progress. One of the messages of THE ULTIMATE FRONTIER is that no matter how high an individual rises, he never fully accomplishes all there is to achieve in a given area. To become a Master is truly magnificent—but one still must progress to become an Angel. When one is an Angel and has learned how to create planets and develop physical vehicles for use by human Egos, he still is not an Archangel. We are always in the process of becoming, and it is pointless to feel dejected because we have not yet arrived. The longest journey begins with one first step. (06-1971)
