How Was Stelle’s Location Chosen?
Question: Why did you choose the site that you did
for the city of Stelle?
Answer: I was given clues as to where the site
would be. I still do not know all of the ramifications of this particular
site. However, there are many advantages to that particular area. One, it is
very close to Chicago
which has all the markets and sources of raw materials that we will need. We
are also on the Canadian shield, which will
remain above the ocean after the turn of the century, and it is an area which
has a low incidence of earthquakes. There are no towns located in this 108
square-mile area and there are no major roads running nearby. It is quite a
nice spot, off the beaten path, but close enough to take advantage of the
many cultural and economic aspects offered by Chicago. (10-1972)
Stelle’s Location and the Canadian
Shield
Q: What is the reason that this particular
spot was chosen for Stelle rather than someplace else in the country?
RK: One of the reasons is that this is the
southern end of what is known as the Canadian Shield,
which is a particularly stable part of the world. It is not so much subject
to rising and falling as other parts of the world. There are, I think, five
other shields in the world that happen to be like that, and so we are here
for the stability that is inherent in this area.
Q: Where are the other shields?
RK: There is one in central Africa; practically
all of Australia; a
portion of India,
the triangle, which is south of the Himalayans, the shield.
Q: What is the scope of the one we are in? Is
this the southern portion?
RK: This is the southern portion and it goes up
to the top of the Hudson Bay and probably over as far as Lake Ontario.
So, it is a pretty extensive section. After the turn of the century, the new
ocean shores of the area we are in now is the Ohio River and Missouri River;
the Ohio on the southeast and Missouri on the southwest, and there is a
general trend of rising of the Canadian Shield to the north.
Q: What do you mean by the shield? Is that
the physical makeup of the earth?
RK: Right. It is a geological formation; a
rock formation in the lithosphere. (11-1981)
