What Does “Speaking in Tongues” Mean?

Question:     What does speaking in tongues mean in the Bible?

Richard:       This refers to the influence of the Brotherhoods in providing a means for the first disciples to go amongst people throughout the whole Mediterranean basin and speak to those people of the news of what had happened in Jerusalem in their own language. Many times they did not even know what they were saying. It amazed the foreigners that these disciples could speak the language so perfectly. This device was used for less than a generation. These days, speaking in tongues refers to a trancelike state people induce in themselves in order to become mediums for spirit entities who babble in foreign sounding gibberish. (07-1973)
