Is “Speaking in Tongues” Dangerous?

Question:   What do you think of the Pentecostal movement which seems to be enjoying new popularity? Could “speaking in tongues” be dangerous?

Answer:     The person who allows himself to be a medium is always in danger of eventual possession when a lower entity speaks through him. All Pentecostal experiences are mediumistic—in other words, the person seeking this kind of experience invites spirit entities to assume control of certain centers of his body. These unseen entities are not necessarily Black Mentalists (evil, discarnate humans with highly developed mental powers) but may be earth-bound spirits who seek to gain control over a person who is incarnate. One may call upon the Holy Spirit to speak through him, but the Higher Beings never answer such calls.

The Pentecostal experience, like voodoo practiced in the West Indies, is a remarkable demonstration of occultism. Under spirit influences, a person may pass into a trance and may thrash about on the floor (holy rollers) or “speak in tongues” unfamiliar to them but which can sometimes be understood by those who know the language but more often is just gibberish. These phenomena are accomplished by entities on the astral plane. (09-1971)
