Omission of Duty Accrues Negative Karma

The subject of karma was discussed. In answer to questions on the karmic implications of different situations, Richard stated that karma accrues only from the results of actions, not from intentions. Even though the best of intentions may motivate an action, if an unexpected bad result occurs, the same karmic debt must be paid as in a similar situation caused by an intentional act. Negative karma can also be accrued by omission of one’s duty to his fellow man. For instance, if an individual is drowning, it is one’s duty to try to save him—even to the extent of risking one’s own life if there is a chance the rescue effort would be successful. Another example of omission of one’s duty is when a banana peel on the sidewalk is noticed but not picked up and someone else slips and is injured because of it.

Every action that is carried out by a human being is preceded by a thought, and our thoughts do tend to turn into actions after a while. But, a thought introduced into the ethers and picked up and acted upon by another individual does not place a karmic debt upon the original author of the thought, for he did not act upon it. Black Mentalists are constantly throwing out negative thoughts, but it is up to each of us to be morally strong and avoid actions which would not be best for all concerned. (08-1969)
