Defending Life
A
man asked Richard whether it is correct to defend oneself against attackers.
Richard answered that it is proper to defend oneself, and quoted the
Commandment in full “Thou shalt not kill except in
defense of self or state.” It is not only right to defend our families and
neighbors, but it is our explicit duty to come to their aid if they are hurt or
attacked. Every adult male must protect women, children and those who are
helpless, even at the risk of his own life. One cannot cast off the role of
defender without suffering karmic consequences. It is often judicious to
avoid interference in private fights, such as those between husband and wife,
but even in this case it is the moral obligation of a good citizen to at least call police who can stop the fight. A man in
the audience pointed out that those who live up to their obligations in
present-day society may be considered foolish for
“getting involved” in other people’s misfortune. Richard said that even
though we may suffer ridicule from our peers, we need answer only to the Brotherhoods. Whatever the Brothers would admire, that
is the thing to do. (07-1970) |
