Who Are the Essenes? Question: Who were the Essenes and what was their relationship to Christ’s ministry? Answer: The Essene Brotherhood existed for many thousands of years before Christ appeared. They knew of His coming and referred to Him as if He were in Their midst. The main headquarters of the Essenes was at Zoan in Egypt, later called Heliopolis. The Essenes branch in the Holy Land was organized by the prophet Isaiah near Engedi, and it was at their mountain retreat that Christ sometimes retired to instruct His disciples and repair the body He was borrowing from Jesus.
