Building Emotional Maturity

One questioner gave the opinion that working in The Stelle Group at this time is partly a therapeutic activity in which the persons involved are presented with opportunities to have the experiences through which they may build emotional maturity. He noted that a new member of The Stelle Group, undertaking the goal of remolding his personality, may experience emotional strains so severe as to result in an emotional crisis. The question was asked whether counselors would be available in Stelle to offer specialized help during such painful, though natural, times of growth.

Richard responded that counselors will be essential in Stelle. Being well-versed in man’s emotional behavior patterns, a counselor can help a troubled person perhaps most importantly by reassuring the individual that the crisis being experienced is quite a normal kind of problem.

Although a person who experiences any sort of emotional crisis assuredly must solve his owe problem, Richard said that the guidance of a qualified counselor may help an individual reach his desired solution more easily. Often the cause of an emotional crisis is not immediately conscious to the individual experiencing the crisis, and for some people a period of months may be required to reach a solution which is emotionally satisfying.

Richard further observed that the most severe emotional crises experienced by a person joining The Stelle Group generally can be expected to occur within a short tine (a year or two) after he begins to work actively with the group. The reason is that work of this nature requires giving up the facades of ego-centered behavior and beginning to learn to truly love others as much as ourselves. This shifting of awareness from self to all assists in one’s acquisition of the Great Virtues—especially humility. Then, too, as time goes by we learn to take ourselves less seriously so that our problems are challenging rather than overwhelming, and solutions are achieved more easily.

Richard pointed out that the persons who move to Stelle will be interested in becoming more emotionally mature and balanced. Consequently, properly recognized professional counselors will be needed so that all help possible may be given the citizens. He noted that out of a cross-section of 15,000 people tested in part of New York City only 7 percent were found to have a reasonable degree of emotional health. The goal for Stelle must be much higher than that. It becomes evident, then, that a carefully selected membership in Stelle is essential; for even under favorable conditions, nearly a lifetime may be required to learn to shape our responses, as we want them to be.
